Our Work
Access to a nutritionally adequate and safe diet at all times is one of the most basic needs for every person; yet for a significant number of households in Ethiopia, it remains difficult to achieve. Good to Grow’s approach includes direct instruction and training in sustainable agricultural methods, in the field and in the classroom, nutrition education through hands-on food and culinary education, support for income-generating initiatives out of the garden, and extended education into the household level and the community at large
In Ethiopia, Good to Grow has been collaborating with institutions such as schools, community centers, and local community leaders. President and Founder of Good to Grow, Hiwot Menbere, has developed contacts with relevant organizations, school and community centers in the past few years, and continues to foster local contacts and organizations to advance the mission and goals of the organization. In the past three years, Menbere has been able to obtain some limited funding and material donations, such as seeds and garden inputs, to assist in the development of several small successful trial gardens in Ethiopia. The schools and these gardens serve as centers through which we organize a number of activities that aim at reaching out to the community.
In 2010, Good to Grow, Inc. expanded to a program-based, tax-exempt 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization to work and build the capacity of gardeners as local resources for information, education, and replication of garden projects at home and in the community. Good to Grow has five board members and has worked with other non-profit organizations and private individuals to position the organization base for future growth.
