Sustainable Gardening and Feeding Project,Abune Basliwos Primary School,Ethiopia

Abune Basliwos Primary School

Picture
Abune Basliwos Primary School is currently a public school that was originally established by an individual for the poor and marginalized people in Wereda. The school has ample space for playground and school gardening purposes. The school gives very small snack support for few very needy students with the contribution made by the school teaching community. The support given to the students is not enough, as the capacity of the school teaching community is limited.

There is food insecurity in a large pocket of the marginalized residents, especially for orphan and vulnerable as well as HIV/AIDS affected and infected community members in schools in Addis Ababa. These situations are manifested by some students fainting while they are attending class.  This occurrence is attributed to lack of access to adequate food at the household level. The water fountains at the school for student use are not adequate for the large number of students.  This leads to the inability to get adequate drinking water which further creates major problems of dehydration for the children that are in school to learn.

                                  Our Objective
Good to Grow and parent’s teachers association of the school (PTA) will work jointly to materialize the stated objectives of the project. The school administration and students will get involved at different levels of project implementation to create a sense of ownership of the project and to provide maximum contributionand commitment to achieve the project goal. This project is intended to alleviate food deficiency problem among some of the students, acquaint the students with sustainable gardening, and provide essential knowledge about agriculture and nutrition.  This increased knowledge will help the students to decrease their vulnerability to diseases and improve their livelihood prospects.  It is strongly believed that the school gardening will be mainstreamed to the existing school curriculum in the long run.
